Curatorial Statement:
For some, home defines their safe place where they feel most themselves. Maybe it is a stagnant place- the house where they grew up and where their parents still live. Maybe it is a broader idea, like the neighborhood, city, even country where they spent most of their life and love. However, for others, these places were hostile and did not create that environment of feeling “at home.” Whether it be persecution, intolerance, abuse, or otherwise, for some, place is not sufficient to be described as home. For these, home is a much more malleable concept- it centers more on the people found later in life who made them feel welcome and needed. This malleability of what centers us and makes us feel secure, both alone and together, is what this exhibition seeks to showcase. Through examination of both displacement from feelings of home, and reconnection with it, artists explore the personal, social, and political aspects of what it means to find your way home.
